Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela

According to the Compostelas we received in Santiago, the official distance for the Camino Primitivo from Oviedo is 315 km. Our All Trails app shows our distance as 349.1 km. Maybe the difference accounts for such things as getting lost or looking for food or our albergue.

We visited the Cathedral but took no photos because of restoration work taking place to the interior. (Photos of the interior of the cathedral on shown in our 2015 blog.) The restoration is expected to be completed ahead of the holy year, 2021. Until then, the traditional Pilgrim Mass will take place at the nearby San Francisco Church at noon every day.

A drumming performance (part of the BateBatukeXI Festival) given at the plaza behind the Cathedral drew a large crowd. There must have been at least 150 drummers and what a great show they put on! There was a lot of gyrating going on among the drummers and the audience.

Plaza del Obradoiro in front of the Cathedral is said to come from “Obradoiro de Oro” (work of gold).

    1. It has been more than seven weeks since life has been ‘ordinary’ but I’m looking forward to fixing my feet and back …Not so much back to cooking, though. 🙁

  1. Congratulations Dave and Judy!!! What a feet!! Your journal has been most enjoyable, now we just need Dave to get the “slide show” together. Your memories of this incredible journey will be recorded forever in your minds, your stories, your writing and your slide shows. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

    1. Thank you! We used the Cicerone guidebook for the Northern Caminos but it isn’t as accurate or complete as the German guidebook (maybe a translation?) The John Brierley guide is best for the French Way.

  2. Hi Aunt Judy and Uncle Dave….I have absolutely loved following your journey. It was like a best selling novel that I couldn’t put down. Your pictures were incredible and your posts were amusing, heartfelt and a pure joy to read. You truly are an inspiration to myself and probably a whole lot of other people!

  3. Thanks for your blog from someone also from the Victoria area. Loved your writing and your photos. Can’t wait to hear about your next Camino.

  4. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I have so enjoyed your pics and writing. Spent this afternoon on my second binge to catch up to you two – hard enough to do by computer never mind in person!! See you soon. Glenna & Brian

  6. Congratulations Judy and Dave. Only just caught up with your blog. It was like reading a great travel book. We are so impressed with what you have achieved on a daily basis and your photos are totally wonderful and descriptive. Such a beautiful place overall. I hope your feet are fully recovered by now and we look forward to seeing you soon. Sue (and Ken).

    1. Thank you so much, Sue. We are glad you enjoyed the blog. I’m still in recovery mode one month later but almost back to normal. Hope to see you soon! 🙂

  7. Thank you for a wonderful blog🙏🏽❤️. It’s most helpful, I’m planning for the Primitivo in September. I made notes of many of the places you recommended
Greetings to you both from Sweden❤️

    1. I am excited that you are planning the Primitivo in September, Eija, and glad that the blog has given you helpful information. The Albergue a Pocina de Muniz before Lugo was our favourite place to stay so I hope it is on your list. 🙂 “Buen Camino!”
