Day 4 in Rabanal del Camino
There were big hugs and heartfelt farewells once again this morning. I jokingly told Michael, the talented German musician who had entertained us so beautifully last night, that we considered locking him in the barn just to keep him here for another evening of music. He mentioned that he’s planning to write a book. If his writing is anything like his singing and guitar playing, it’s sure to be a bestseller.
It was rewarding to read their comments in the guest book. They wrote things like, “best time ever,” “fantastic,” and “this was the best place.” One especially memorable and unusual entry was written by a young woman from Taiwan in elegant Chinese script.
We had another busy morning preparing for the arrival of today’s pilgrims. Janine whipped up another pot of her delicious lentil soup for us hospitaleros and baked a cake for this afternoon’s tea with the pilgrims. Though the cake got a little scorched, thanks to our quirky oven, she simply trimmed off the burnt bottom, added some icing, and no one was the wiser. Meanwhile, I made two jars of jam from the garden’s yellow plums, which turned out beautifully.
We were disappointed for awhile that we only had two pilgrims arrive but, by later on in the afternoon, we had an additional nine. Some had walked 35 kilometres – the distance Janine and I had taken two days to do. That explains why it was quieter and lights were out earlier this evening.
A couple from Eastern Canada came around to have a look at our garden and were most impressed. They told us they wished they were staying here instead of where they were. Nice to hear!

Well, you two are busy bees! I love the comments from your guests ! 35 Km – amazing. Love your pics, especially of all of you around the table – keep them coming!
Carolyn, we’ve had such lovely guests! We’re sad to see them go and yet excited for them continuing on their journey. And each group of pilgrims is different. I’m glad you like following the journey. 🙏 😃
Hi Judy. Sounds like you & Janine make a darn good team – homemade soup, cakes & jam! Sounds better than what’s served at our home! Love the guests comments – you should both be pleased you’re offering them what you do best – a warm welcome, tasty eats, and the fun of socializing with like-minded people.
Hope the rest of the this first week goes as well.
Maggie
Hi Maggie! Yes, Janine and I make an excellent team. She’s a great cook and baker and I am her helper. Today I measured and weighed ingredients for bread pudding made from the white bread that goes stale within a day. Soon we’ll do the welcoming and socializing – especially Janine when I am taking taking down the details from their passports. I don’t know how we would manage without Nigel out there inviting the pilgrims in. I hope all is going well for you at home and that your weather is as good as ours. ☀️ 😃
What lovely comments by the pilgrims. You and Janine are a great team!
Everything is going very smoothly, Cheryl. Teamwork is great! 👍
Wow! You have certainly been busy Judy. What a great experience you are providing to the pilgrims. That jam sounds yummy.😊
The plum jam is really good – tart with not too much sugar and just the two ingredients. It’s been so busy, Joy. It’s like working 16 hours a day but the appreciation is definitely rewarding.
