Day 16 in Rabanal del Camino

Day 16 in Rabanal del Camino

I’m not exactly sure how I feel tonight. Janine and I are in limbo, neither fully hospitaleras nor pilgrims. This afternoon, we handed over the reins of carrying on Guacelmo’s warm hospitality to Chris and Shawna from Canada and Annie from the UK. Nigel left this afternoon, and tomorrow Janine and I will be back on the Camino.

Janine and I went to say “good-bye” to Susanna at the supermercado, and later we had one last lively chat with the wonderful ladies who tried to teach us Spanish. When we explained that we’d be leaving Rabanal tomorrow, they surprised us by singing us a song! Engaging with these spirited ladies was a huge highlight.

Janine prepared a delicious meal of chicken, vegetables, and salad to welcome the new hospitaleros. With the kitchen and patio bustling, we headed out to the garden for dinner. We have 25 pilgrims tonight, the fullest we’ve been during our stint.

We’ve only lit the fire twice in the last two weeks, but Chris lit it today. The warmth acted like a magnet, drawing pilgrims into the salon. When I heard the strumming of a guitar and “Country Roads,” I knew that Janine had made the request. It was heartwarming to see everyone gathered, singing, and sharing, by the warm fire.

Tomorrow, we’ll set off toward Cruz de Ferro, hiking with the pilgrims we welcomed today. It’s one of the most symbolic places on the Camino, and it’s there I’ll leave my little red rock, which carries so much meaning. I wrote about it in my first post, and tomorrow, it will be time to let it go. We’ll end the day at El Acebo after a challenging descent.

Dave called today. He sounded happy at the beginning of the day but less so later on. He found his first yellow arrows and walked along the Douro River to the Atlantic Ocean—then promptly got lost after returning to Porto! It’s a good warm-up for our Camino Portuguese, which we’ll begin in just a few days. It’s strange to think that soon, we’ll be walking together again.

  1. As usual, Judy, I have enjoyed reading about your experiences while hosting all the new pilgrims that land on your doorstep each day. You have been busy making their journey memorable, as it has been for you. Good luck with your Portuguese walk, starting tomorrow and a happy reunion with Dave when you meet in Porto. We have great memories of that beautiful city.
Endings are often a little sad but you have a new beginning to look forward to now.

    1. Thank you so much, Pat! I’m glad you enjoyed reading about my experiences as hospitaleras with Janine. Now Dave and I are beginning another chapter today, walking from Porto to Santiago. It was a three hour very fast bus ride to get from Santiago to Port and it will take 15 days to walk back. 😂

  2. Endings are bittersweet because the next beginning has the element of the unknown. Thankfully, Dave has arrived in
Porto and I am excited for you to travel the route that Ray and I so recently did in May.

  3. Judy, You and Janine created a warm welcome for the pilgrims, living up to the title of hospitaleras, which obviously was much appreciated. Thank you for being so generous with your time by sharing your experiences; I’m guessing that at the end of a long day, it would have been tempting to sleep instead. I’m sure that it will be good to see Dave again and wish you safe travels.

  4. Hi Judy and Janine
What great ambassadors you and Janine are leaving an impact on so many pilgrims experiencing Rabanal with your great hospitality!
It will be sad to say goodbye but tomorrow will be a new chapter
And I’m so glad Dave is also there.
    Enjoy,
    ❤️AT

  5. Awww

So many wonderful moments you have created and received
Looking forward to hearing about the rest of the Camino

So happy Dave is lost and found👍
Your heart will be full as you leave.

    Sending love
    Bon

    1. Thanks, Bon. One adventure ends and another one begins. We’re looking forward to following yellow arrows, meeting pilgrims and seeing what’s around the next corner. Excited!

  6. Judy,
It sounds like you’ve had an amazing experience. All the best on your Portuguese Camino, I know you will enjoy it thoroughly, even if it’s not perfect. It will be all part of the adventure, as David has already found out. Thank goodness the Air Canada strike has be averted and our flight this Saturday is scheduled to leave as planned. We will look forward to catching up when we are both back home.

    1. Have a fantastic time, Cyndi. We’re glad the AC strike was averted. Looking forward hearing about your journey at the pilgrim gathering in November. 👣 👣 😃
