October 6-8: Santiago to Muxia
We’ve got some catching up to do! Things started out well when we left Santiago for Finisterre two days ago. For the first 12 kilometres, we had only light rain on and off and beautiful countryside to walk through. “On the Road Again” kept playing in my head!

Then things took a turn. Rain and a steep climb of 210 metres in just two kilometres are a bad combination. It felt like 100% humidity from the rain and 100% humidity from our sweat, so by the time we reached the top, we were soaked. The thought of having lunch at the restaurant in beautiful Ponte Maceira was the only thing that kept us motivated. We remembered the village well from our first Camino in 2015. It’s a beautiful medieval spot with a five-arch bridge from the 13th century, built on the foundations of an ancient Roman bridge.

Unfortunately, when we arrived in Ponte Maceira, the restaurant was “completo!” We had to trudge on another four kilometres to Negreira, and it seemed to go on forever! We practically inhaled our meal at the first bar we found and headed straight to our accommodation, totally exhausted.

That night, we debated whether to keep going as planned or change course. In the end, we decided to take the Monbus from Negreira, and we were not alone. The bus was full of other pilgrims who got off at various stops along the Camino or carried on to beautiful Finisterre. A few stayed on the bus like we did, all the way to Muxía. The weather improved the further west we went – a huge bonus! We had booked three nights at the lovely Hotel La Cruz, right on the waterfront. Rihanna said she was giving us “the best room in the hotel,” because it was Dave’s birthday! Even the shower has a view of the ocean!

Muxia is the perfect place to relax and explore, and we couldn’t be happier. Yesterday, we ran into a few familiar faces: a family we met in O Porrino on the Camino Portuguese, Margaret from Camino for Good, and Karen and Steven who stayed at Refugio Guacelmo where I was volunteering. They mentioned having carrot cake in the garden, so I knew exactly what day they were there—September 10th. That was the day Janine baked carrot cake for my birthday.

What fun we had this morning. It was a windy one, and I think it’s a prelude to the hurricane that’s supposed to hit soon. We headed out to the peninsula and up to Monte do Corpino, the highest point with views over the estuary. The wind was so strong, it felt like it was trying to blow us off the 70-metre-high lookout! It was fun, though, with our rain ponchos swirling around.

Tropical Cyclone Kirk is expected to arrive at the Iberian Peninsula tonight. The forecast is for strong winds, rain, and waves up to six metres high. Gusts could reach 200 km/h in some areas, and red weather warnings might be issued. Rihanna told us this area often gets hit by storms but she has never yet seen a hurricane here. Okay, so it looks like the rain we’ve had on this Camino was just a prelude to a hurricane. Here we are, right on the waterfront with another adventure ahead!

Happy birthday Dave!
Thank you, Arlene!
So happy you’re latest journey had some sunshine in it – drying out and having a delicious meal sounded like such a luxury after that long trek in the wind and rain. You two sure are troopers. Fingers crossed you’re not going to experience the ferocity of Cyclone Kirk and that it blows itself out before reaching your area. You’ve made it this far!
Take care, stay safe, warm & dry.
Mucho love,
Maggie
Hi Maggie! We’re looking out at miserable weather now, but at least we had enough good weather to explore much of Muxia. It’s a beautiful and peaceful beach/fishing village. Tomorrow we move on to Finisterre, then on to Santiago the day after, and then to Lisbon. We’ll be back in Victoria on October 16th. See you then!
So happy you are in Muxia.
It’s such a different place.
Happy birthday Dave. Another birthday on the Camino.
Congratulations.
Won’t be long before we see you.
Have more fun.

Hi Bon! Muxia is great! We were here in 2015 on a tour and had probably one hour to explore. Having three days here is pretty special. ♥️

See you soon

Happy Birthday, Dave. Wonderful pics. Hope you get to Fisterra and enjoy your time over there. Take care.
Thank you, France! Relaxing, having fun for three whole days in Muxia without having to pack up is the best birthday present. 😊
Happy Birthday to Dave! You’ve both had quite an adventure going to the “end of the world!” I try to picture those brave souls who first sailed to the New World – wow! Stay safe in the storm. Carolyn
Thank you, Carolyn! We just watched the sun go down over the edge of the world. The brave souls who ventured out might have thought they would go over the edge just like the sun, but took the chance. 😮
